Religion in Kushiel's Dart

Welcome to my project for Religion and Popular Culture Class: Religion in Kushiel's Dart

The book Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey contains many themes that people can relate to and a few ideas that alienate certain groups of society. It looks into many aspects of human nature and does not shy away from some of our more taboo practices and topics. When writing the books, Ms. Carey said that she wanted to "create a world I'd like to live in". The storyline is considered to be alternative historical fantasy, diverging from our world at the death of Jesus. Therefore, the religions and cultures of the book share many parallels with our own world.
Jacqueline Carey lives in Michigan with her partner, Julie. She was raised in an agnostic household, which cultivated her interest in religion and myth. Kushiel's Dart was her first published book. With it, she challenged ideas in fantasy writing about sex, love, acceptance and women-as-the-victim roles.

Kushiel's Dart portrays love as a divine force. If you follow your heart and don't cause harm to others, you are honouring the gods. While the book creates controversy by using actual religions in the story, I don't believe it condemns religion or religious followers. It offers messages of love, acceptance and perseverance through hardship that we can all take to heart and learn from.

"Mortals conquer and slay; Gods rise and fall. The games we play out on the board of Earth echo across the vault of Heaven." (Kushiel's Chosen)
